The development of Digital Displacement technology involves the integration of mechanical design, embedded software, electronics, systems engineering, simulation and control development. Artemis will offer PhD topics targeted to meeting the next key technical challenges in the development of this technology. These will include the following types of research activities:
– Mechanical design of complex machine parts.
– Prototype and testing of mechanical designs.
– CFD, FEM multi-body and transient magnetic modelling of Digital Displacement machines.
– Time domain, dynamic simulation of hydraulic and mechanical systems.
– Development of system control software algorithms.
– Experimental testing of machines on test rigs.
– Analysis of experimental data. Calibration of simulation models with real-world data.
– Development of signal processing algorithms.
– Embedded software & electronics design.
The specific research project topic will be decided upon discussion with prospective candidates based on their experience, skills and interests.
Artemis is a dynamic and growing company with a welcoming and inclusive work environment. This project is currently attracting inward investment from Danfoss Power Solutions, who are planning to manufacture in Scotland and bring Digital Displacement to market in the coming years.
The students carrying out this research will benefit from access to test rigs and vehicles, a prototyping workshop and a suite of advanced engineering simulation and design software tools. This is an opportunity to undertake research which directly and quickly influences the direction of technical and business development in a well-funded, serious and ambitious technology development. This will help the candidate to develop highly industrially relevant skills with awareness of the business environment that comes from co-location with a manufacturing center.

Relevant Skills / Experience
Qualifications: A UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in an appropriate subject, or relevant qualifications and experience. Due to funding restrictions, all applicants must fall within the University’s eligibility criteria for UK and EU fees, and must be eligible to work in the UK.
All candidates will be subject to the University of Edinburgh’s criteria for eligibility for entry to a PhD.
This programme would be of interest to an engineer of any background that is keen to apply analytical skills to understanding how complex Mechatronic systems behave and are controlled. As the range of projects on offer are wide in scope there is not one specific skill relevant to all, but any of the following would be relevant:
- Mechanical design, build & test of prototype parts
- Simulation of dynamic systems
- Experience with Matlab / Simulink
- Data analysis & Signal Processing
- Interest in technology development and prototyping.
Attitude, energy and commitment are equally as important as academic skills and qualifications. Many of the projects will involve hardware prototyping and testing of machines operating in our laboratory, or in the field, so a practical approach and willingness to ‘get your hands dirty’ is an advantage.
