Artemis set to test alternative traction system

Artemis is leading the development of a new type of hydraulic transmission for diesel powered rail vehicles.  The project, funded by the Rail Safety and Strategy Board (RSSB) will comprise a JCB diesel engine powering an E-dyn 96 Digital Displacement hydraulic pump.  The pump will supply flow to axle mounted Digital Displacement motors and the transmission will be installed in a Chiltern Trains Driving Van Trailer which has been made available for the project.  By combining highly efficient Digital Displacement hydraulic transmission technology with the latest generation of diesel engines, faster journey times and fuel savings can be realised.  The technology combination offers a potential solution for parts of the rail network that are uneconomical to electrify.
